Large Jobs on Diamond

As a courtesy to users of the Libraries as well as your colleagues who work with the Diamond system, please refrian from running larger than average jobs of any type at any time unless you have notified LS&T personnel.

While we recently increased the capacity of our BIBTEMP file, it is still possible to fill it up with a very large job. This is particularly true on the weekend, when it is not being cleared automatically with a full backup. When the BIBTEMP file fills up, no records can be created or modified, meaning no circulation, no reserves, and no patron self-renewal.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. As always, feel free to approach me, George Fowler, Larry Banks, or anyone in LS&T with questions in this regard.

Regular System Maintenance Schedule

This is a reminder to everyone that all University Libraries systems -- including Diamond and the Libraries' web servers -- are rebooted as part of regular system maintenance each Monday between 7:00 and 8:00 am. Staff are asked to refrain from starting work directly on any server (Diamond database work, web page editing, etc.) immediately prior to or during this time. All systems will be available when Paley Library opens at 8:00 am.

This regular process will clear any unnecessary processes and allow the servers to take new self-inventory so that they may run optimally. The procedure was developed from recommendations from Innovative Interfaces and Computer Services, and scheduled in consultation with the Technology Steering Committee (meeting of 3/3/2003).

As always, please feel free to approach anyone in LS&T with questions in this regard.

Diamond WebOPAC Search Problem (Garnet, too)

There is a problem with the public catalog (WebOPAC) of Diamond, the primary symptoms of which are the appearance of relevancy-ranked results with some searches (we currently don't use relevancy ranking), and the appearance of unusual and incomplete records within those search results.

We do not believe the issue to be related to the increase in available item records that took place earler this week, as the WebOPAC on the Garnet development server is displaying the same behavior.

A service call has been opened with Innovative Interfaces, who is working with Digital Technologies staff toward a resolution. Updates will be posted here in the TALON and sent to the LIBSTAFF and TSC mailing lists should we learn anything beyond this.

Feel free to approach anyone in LS&T with questions in this regard.
