AirPAC Installation Complete

Installation of the AirPAC module, a text-based, scriptless interface to the Library catalog and one of the second-phase Technology Fee projects, was completed on January 18. It can be viewed with any browser at http://diamond.temple.edu/airpac/.

AirPAC was designed by Innovative Interfaces for small-screen devices like mobile phones and PDAs. A user with a wireless handheld device can browse the stacks while browsing the catalog (or vice versa). It's text interface also makes the catalog better available to users who make use of screen readers or other assistive technology. As an added bonus, those who might not have scripting available -- whether intentionally disabled or because they're using an older brower -- can use the catalog without problem.

Plans are already underway for a formal AirPAC announcement and rollout later in the semester, and we're working toward tighter integration with the text interface of the Libraries' web. Don't look for a lot of changes, however. What little configuration can be done is mostly controlled by the main Web OPAC.

In the meantime, feel free to point users to it now. It's up and it works.

Brodei interruption tomorrow afternoon

Access to Brodei, the Libraries' development Web server, will be briefly interrupted tomorrow, Wednesday, January 11, in the afternoon between 3:00 and 3:30pm so that a software upgrade can be installed. Content updaters working on subject guides or other pages should save any drafts and exit Contibute by 3pm to avoid any problems. The Libraries' public Web site will not be affected and will remain available.

Any downtime should be brief. Should anything unexpected occur, an update will be provided in TALON.

H:\ Drive Access Problems (Resolved)

As some of you are aware, we are experiencing problems with the H:\ drive. We are working diligently on restoring access for those who do not have it. This work involves Network Services and may cause everyone to lose access temporarily while the connection is repaired. We apologize for the inconvenience and will update you as soon as we have definitive news.

The server that hosts our H:\ Drive (Greatgray) is not communicating with the Domain. It is unclear why it only seems to be affecting some people.

The communication was re-enabled and everyone's access should be restored by a log-out/log in.

Release 20005 Installation - 1/4 (Garnet) & 1/9 (Diamond)

Installation of Millennium Release 2005 will take place in two phases over the next two weeks.

Garnet will be updated tomorrow morning, Wednesday, January 4, 2006. That's phase one. Beginning that afternoon, staff should take the time to test their regular functions, and report any anomalies/problems to Larry Banks.

If all goes well with the installation, and no severe functionality issues are found, we will update Diamond on Monday, January 9, 2006 during our regular scheduled maintenance period 7:00-8:00 AM. That's phase two.

This is (obviously) later than the November installation originally planned by the Technology Steering Committee, to accommodate workflow and desktop changes required for the new release.

If, in the unlikely event that the Garnet installation has problems (including an inordinately long installation time) or any system functionality is found to be severely out of whack after the installation, the Diamond installation will be postponed until a resolution is found. Staff will be notified in any case.

The list of enhancements that come with Release 2005 may be found on the Libraries Intranet. Note that this file is password protected (as are all Diamond-related PDFs. The password may be found in the WINGSS Solutions Database (search for "Innovative" or "Intranet").

As usual please feel free to approach anyone in LS&T with any questions in this regard.
